Research-Driven Planning and Evaluating the Impact of the Drug Market Intervention in Charleston
The West Virginia SAC partnered with the Charleston, WV Police Department (CPD) to provide research and data analysis to support CPD's Drug Market Intervention (DMI) project (funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance [BJA]). Over the past six months, the CPD, WV SAC, and several community partners have identified strategies to enhance the DMI project, with an emphasis on community revitalization. During the planning phase, CPD worked closely with the researchers at the WV SAC and met monthly with community partners to develop a strategic plan. A community survey was developed, distributed, and analyzed to assist with informed decision making for selecting strategies. The partnership also allowed for data sharing and the use of address-level crime data for various statistical purposes, including spatial analysis. The resulting strategic plan was recently approved by BJA and funds have been released to proceed with the two-year implementation phase of the project. The WV SAC will continue to do research to support the DMI project during the implementation phase in addition to conducting a project evaluation.
